Symptoms, what problems can you solve by replacing the pressure switch
- The coffee machine fails to reach the correct pressure during the extraction cycle. This is one of the main indicators of a malfunctioning pressure switch.
- If water flows out too quickly, there is a good chance that the pressure switch no longer controls the internal pressure. The espresso will have insufficient body and little aroma.
- Another warning sign of a faulty pressure switch is water leaking from the portafilter. Constant dripping even after the cycle has stopped indicates that the pressure is no longer being detected correctly.
- Furthermore, you may notice possible venting from the safety valve or the boiler cap, a sign that the pressure switch is not correctly detecting the bars and never interrupts the heating of the heating element.

Expert advice
- Before purchasing this replacement component, check if the problem can be resolved with a simple cleaning of the water circuit using a descaler. Also, ensure that the internal connection of your old pressure switch is free from limescale or obstructions.
- Before replacing the pressure switch, we recommend checking the connecting tube that links it to the boiler (if present). Often, limescale can block the passage, skewing the pressure reading even if the new pressure switch works perfectly. Always use high-temperature Teflon tape or suitable thread sealant to seal the connection to avoid dripping.
- If inspectable, ensure there are no limescale blockages in the boiler.
- Perform a thorough descaling of the boiler before replacing the spare part to prevent limescale pieces from entering the new pressure gauge.
Installation instructions
- Installing the pressure switch is a relatively easy task for those with a minimum of DIY skills.
- It is commonly located under the base and is connected to a copper tube or directly inserted into the boiler.
- Ensure that the appliance is turned off, unplugged, and completely cool.
- A standard wrench is sufficient to unscrew it.
- Always apply thread sealant to the thread of the connection to prevent water leaks.
Technical operation, what is it for?
What is the purpose of the pressure switch in a coffee machine? This component constantly monitors the pressure inside the boiler during heating. When the pressure reaches the set bar level (e.g., 0.5-1.2bar), the pressure switch cuts off the power to the heating element, stopping the heating and thus the pressure. As soon as coffee or steam is dispensed and the pressure drops, the switch turns the heating element back on. A functioning pressure switch is synonymous with espresso coffee extracted at the right pressure and a coffee machine free from leaks or venting.
