How to choose the correct filter holder

  1. Exact brand and model: the filter holder must match the specific series of the machine; even models with the same commercial name may have different bayonet attachments in different production revisions.
  2. Compatible filter type: check if the filter holder is for ground coffee (1 or 2 doses), for ESE pods or for both. Some Ariete and De'Longhi models include filters in the kit; others are just the filter holder without a filter.
  3. Pressurised or non-pressurised filter: pressurised filters (also known as double-walled) are suitable for coarsely ground pre-ground coffee and still ensure a thick crema; non-pressurised filters are for home baristas who grind on demand and use quality coffee.
  4. Material and finish: for the De'Longhi La Specialista, there is also a filter holder without a bottom in wood, used for cup or scale extractions; it is an advanced accessory and not a wear replacement part.

Recommended maintenance

  • Clean the filter holder and filters after each coffee session: coffee residues oxidise quickly and alter the taste of subsequent extractions.
  • Remove the filter from the filter holder and rinse them separately under running water; once a week, soak them in hot water with a specific coffee detergent to dissolve oily deposits.
  • Periodically check the gasket of the brew group: if the filter holder does not attach with the usual resistance or leaks water from the side, the brew group gasket is likely to need replacing, not the filter holder.
  • Do not leave the filter holder mounted on the machine when not in use: the residual heat from the group cooks the coffee residues in the filter and accelerates the wear of the gasket.

Common problems and solutions

Filter holder that does not insert or turn Hardened or swollen brew group gasket blocking the bayonet attachment; replace the brew group gasket before assessing the filter holder.
Water leakage from the filter holder during extraction Worn brew group gasket or deformed filter holder due to drops; check the gasket first, then the integrity of the filter holder.
Coffee coming out the side instead of the spout The filter is clogged and obstructed or the filter holder is mounted incorrectly; disassemble, clean and reassemble correctly before proceeding with replacement.
Broken filter holder or broken handle Breakage due to drops or excessive mechanical stress. It must be replaced with the specific spare part for the model; it is not repairable.

Quick FAQs

Is the De'Longhi Dedica EC680 filter holder compatible with the EC785 and EC885?

Yes, the filter holders of the Dedica series are generally compatible between the EC680, EC685, EC785 and EC885 models, which share the same 58 mm bayonet brew group. Always check the spare part code in the product sheet for official confirmation.

What is the difference between pressurised and non-pressurised filter holders?

The pressurised filter holder (double-walled) creates a second pressure chamber that generates crema even with medium quality or irregularly ground pre-ground coffee; it is the standard type on many home machines. The non-pressurised filter holder requires freshly ground coffee with precise grind, but allows the home barista to better control the extraction and achieve a more natural crema.

Can I use ESE pods with the standard filter holder, without an adapter?

It depends on the model: some filter holders already include a specific filter for ESE pods (indicated in the product sheet), others require a dedicated filter holder or a separate adapter. For the De'Longhi Dedica and Ariete Retrò series, there are specific versions for ESE pods; check compatibility before purchase.
